Acrylic Painting Faces, Daughter Growing Up, Photo Editing Fun

I will dive right in.  My girl has grown up!  Oh how I remember the sweet homeschool days and how my princess helped with the children younger than herself.

Fast forward to our recent beach trip.

michaela and mom 2016

My sweet girl is still my princess, but she has grown up! She is ever fun-loving, ever fun, and I love her so much! She is my heart. I cannot even put into words the emotions that have been involved in getting us from her wonderful birth to where we are today. We have walked some rough places together, but here we are! How did I get such a firecracker of a girl! Oh yes. I am her mom.

Now, not much to say about the following photos individually. I just wanted to share with you some of the most recent awesome vintage hats I've acquired for the shop!

 red vintage Henry Pollak

The red hat is a vintage Henry Pollack of New York (Glenover vintage hat).

 Vintage golf hat

How about a vintage Crosby golf hat!

And it's fake, the best way to have it, but how about a coon skin cap?

And be still my heart! This next hat was gorgeous! I knew it would not last long. And it didn't!

In other news, I often scan photos before I sell them. My first thought is that I might put information on line and connect families to their ancestors. However, as is the case with this photo, sometimes there is no real information to record. Just faces. Are they not sweet? This photo sold to a local doll artist. "For inspiration," she cheerfully told me. I know the photo is in good hands.

If you are bored to tears at this point you may click away, but I wanted to show you a recent painting if you are up for it.  It is so cool, to me, to look back at versions of paintings.  I think a canvas will sort of unfold as it should once you get the basic thought on there.  Or even just the color of paint that is talking to you!  I started with a girl's face.

Looking back, maybe there is more life in the rougher draft than the final cut! I don't know. There is indeed life in her face, but not enough, in my opinion. And her eyes looks a little off. I kept painting. Finally, either I just had enough or she declared herself done, and I found a really cool frame to put her in. I call her CAGED, because there is something very sad and oppressed about her.

Do names for her come to mind? Do you see a different person in the first photo than in the second one?

That's all for now! Thank you for bearing with me! Thanks for visiting!
Enjoy this day!

A Way Cool Hat

One of the things I love most about the shop and selling vintage clothes and hats is meeting the customers. Yesterday I met a very fun person, someone whose boyfriend is a musician, and we hit it off immediately in our feelings about how clothes add to a gig or performance. The dressing up can totally affect how you feel about playing. Anyway, it was while she was in the shop and we were talking clothes that I made the decision to go ahead and pull this hat from the shelf to keep for myself. It is just amazing the way it fits and sits. Yep, I said that. I will wear it out when the weather gets cooler.

This hat is just talking to me right now. And I gotta listen. ;)

Enjoy this day!

A Lovely Face From Long Ago

My dear friends,

Suddenly, I am me. I just am not sure how to even say it, but it is like there is light. I have many areas in my life where I need to improve, including the amount of quiet time I spend with God, but I have such a sense of "everything is okay." Finally.

I have acquired over the last few months literally dozens and dozens of old photos. Many of the ones I have purchased lately are from the 1800s. Small photos. The faces seem to have so much to tell, but they are mostly somber. The attire looks stiff and hot, but very proud and modest. I found a tiny photo the other day, and the girl's face was so faded, you almost could not even make it out, but I scanned it and applied an effect or two in a photo editing app.

Isn't it amazing? If only her name had been written on the back. I wonder, oh I wonder who she was!

The next photo is not old, as I am sure you will instantly know. I wore one of the vintage hats for awhile in the shop on Saturday. It was a fun thing to do, and a hit! I sold 11 hats over the weekend! I rolled my hair up in the back and rocked a pillbox hat.

Isn't it cute?

That is all for now. Jason and I are about to practice our guitars. I have not really practiced in days. Ugh. I should be practicing 5 hours a day to get to 10,000 hours!! You know they say 10,000 hours means mastery!

Enjoy this day!

Hats and More Hats

Dear Blog Peeps,

We have 40 more minutes here and it will officially be Thurday. What a long day this has been. Work. Raging storms. A nap after work from sheer exhaustion. A meeting with a tax preparer. A bible study. And here I am. But I love the challenge. The tax meeting was most interesting. I am learning what I need to do to record-keep and thrive. It's such a learning curve.

Hats sell. They just do. No, every person who walks into Sidetracked is not a hat person. But hat people do make their way to Sidetracked, and it is a joyous union!! Here are a few recent finds.

This one was crushed and in need of some reshaping! But oh my it's a beauty!

You have seen this one, on me, but have to share again. This hat is just magical. It's perfect.

Another recent find. An excellent choice for spring!

My sweet sleeping lady (HELP ME NAME HER!!) wears a dark blue straw hat. I say straw, but honestly I don't know what to call it. I need to so some research on this one! Anyone know what to call this crinkly stuff?

In closing, a sweet corner of the shop. A new mirror. A vintage dress. Drying roses. The letters L-Y-N-N sent to me by my sweet sister. My happy place.

Enjoy this day!

Just Another Day and a Hat with Great Shape

Dear Peeps,

Another heavy duty bag went into the shop this evening. I really like the way it turned out.

Made from pieces from the fabric stockpile.

The strap ends in a heavy metal ring on one side. Love it. Great for hanging keys.

Pink pocket on one side has a metal snap closure.

This to me is a great flea market bag or Saturday bag.

Now. Hats!! I have added 6 hats to my inventory this week. As of today, this is my favorite.

Its shape is just perfect. It has a steampunk flair that I love!

That is all for now, except that we are supposed to get some serious precipitation tonight and into early morning. I had planned to be off work tomorrow anyway to get a crown. Not on my head mind you, though that is a nice thought, but on a tooth! So I am ready to be snowed in.

Enjoy this day.

Ringing in the New Year

Dear Friends,

Can you believe that another year is coming to a close?! 2015 has been a year of great struggle and great accomplishment in my own life. Without going into too much detail, I will say that it takes years to recover from abuse. That said, I am the happiest that I have been in a long, long time. I feel very grateful for those who have lifted me up and given me confidence to move forward with my life.

Now, my latest millinery pin.

I am surprised at how many hats I have sold in the shop! In fact, hats are some of the best sellers! Ladies love them. A flower on a hat is especially pretty.

Along those lines, I was thrilled to find this amazing hat rack for the shop. It seems to be just as vintage. as some of the hats in the shop.

This pretty vintage pin is another recent find. Oooooh, I sure had to wear it at least once. You know. To test it.

Finally, I want to wish everyone a wonderful and prosperous 2016!! May all of our dreams come true!

Enjoy this day!

Good Monday Morning and a Vintage Hat

Dear Friends,

Here it is another Monday! Seems like the older I get the faster they roll around. The predicted rain has started falling here, getting harder and harder. I can hear it on the windows and the rooftop. There is something both wonderful and depressing about rain. I love the sunshine and bright sky. But being inside a cozy little home and listening to the rain outside creates a sweet feeling of safeness. I like to work on things at my craft area when the weather is like this.

Business goes well, and Saturday was a lovely day. I love meeting my customers! There are so many personalities that wander into the shop. Tend shop -- It is what I was meant to do!

I have purchased another lot of old postcards. There are so many treasures in these stacks of vintage communication. I have also purchased an unusual lot of vintage photos which include scenes from old movies with big-time movie stars. There is a photograph from the Wizard of Oz!

I have not decided what to do with the photos I purchased. I want to make sure they are handled as they should be and assigned the correct value! How interesting they are!! Must get to work. Just on a quick lunch break. Enjoy this day! Lynn ps -- hello to new visitors!

And So I Begin Again

My dear friends,

The more things change the more they stay the same, I guess. Perhaps the planets are aligned to help me clean house in more ways than one lately.  My washing machine blew up two days ago. One of my sons and I are going in together to buy a new and better washing machine in the next couple of weeks. That is a refreshing thing. Hard to believe that I have been acquainted with about four or five washing machines over the last five years. I have moved four times in the last five years which has brought me in contact with multiple of many appliances, including clothes dryers, toasters, coffee pots, etc.

The washing machine is not the only thing that decided to break permanently. I received a notice yesterday that my seven years' worth of blogging at A Mother's Journal is gone.  Done for. Ended.  Oh, I could have made an effort to disinfect the files that someone hacked, all 126 of them, but it contains so many photos and links to a painful past, I am happy to see it go.  When you go to A Mother's Journal you will now be directed to my new home online. It is a clean, new online house full of antique white, guitars and music, touches of pink and silver, and a happy heart.   I feel lighter and better, and I did not realize what a weight it all was until it was magically gone without my having to make a choice.

I look forward to continuing my friendship with those of you I have known for so long. I look forward to new friendships online.

The little caboose where I have my shop called sidetracked is a sweet, sweet place to be. There are vintage hats, soft linen and cotton creations from a sewing machine, and lovely little collectibles like the Norman Rockwell plate that just sold.

Enjoy this day! (Some things never change.) Lynn
